Quilt by Lise Day

Scrabbling through the ragbag
of my life
scraps of this
a toddler’s dress
and that
kitchen curtains
forgotten faded
detail blurred
I cut and place and piece
arrange darks and lights
till new-sewn
make a quilt.

The darker patches
edges raw and frayed
purple despair
lonely shades of grey
abandoned bits torn
fabric beyond repair
I need to place between
the sunny yellows
of the here and now
rainbow chintz
sap-green floral
liberty prints.

So the past is stitched
as I tack and trim
reshape motley memories
create a new design
my hidden history will remain
in a richly patterned counterpane.
