The Spaces in Between

The Spaces in Between by Lise Day

I had in mind
to write a poem
about spaces
space next to me
in the double bed
morning space
as I raise the blinds
space beside me
walking (no dog)
no hand in mine
space in my heart
as evening light
caresses the garden.

But this week
two babes slept
In the room beside me
I iced a cake
with dolphins
on a party morning
for a newly six-year-old
a small hand
crept into mine
while walking
and suddenly
I had no space
to write a poem.
