Auschwitz 2009

Auschwitz 2009 by Michael Keeling

Stacked shoes,
children’s and adults’.
Fashions of the Forties.

Spectacles but no eyes,
hair but no heads;
a roll of cloth
woven
from human misery.

Stables were their quarters;
serried rows of deceit
en route to salvation
and the chambers of death;
tall chimneys their crucifix.

People, people, people,
pensive,
subdued.
There are trees
around this mausoleum
but no bird sings.
