New Music

by Lise Day

I thought my symphony of life
was written. The notes, neatly
patterned in black and white
ordained in harmony.
Dutiful and schooled, my
fingers played the score.
Here and there a discordant
sound, occasionally a daring
departure into jazz.
Sometimes the pace slowed deep
funereal beat. Andante or allegro
my nimble fingers coped.

Suddenly the notes turned
upside down
escaped
the page

my fingers trembled hovered
retreated
into

silence

Then, with a single note at first,
new music, tentative but true.

I know I have heard and read this before but not for a long time. I read it anew and loved it all over again – especially the last lines!
