Promises, Promises

by Elaine Edwards

You promised that you’d
catch me in the water.
You made me swim much further than
I thought I could but
you caught me.

You promised that you’d
drive me to the party.
You drove so slowly I could’ve wept but
you drove me.

You promised that you’d
be at my graduation.
You came late and nearly missed my moment but
you showed.

You promised that you’d
walk me up the aisle.
You could hardly hide your tears but
you walked me.

You promised that you’d
stay alive to help me
rear my kids.

You lied.
