In Praise of Shadows

by Elizabeth Trew

I love the depth of shadows,
deeper than the light.
I love their shade,
a quiet, humble light.
Trees and clouds,
the cleft of mountains
leave their cadence over earth,
shadows on the edge of night.
My shadow follows me,
it grows or curls up tight.
My house is on *Belle Ombre Road,
my open door absorbs its light.
I feel the gravity of shadows,
I see you in another light.
