Poetry

by Angela Prew

I used to tell my students,
‘Poetry is the
essence of expression.
No more ifs, ands, buts.’
But that is too simple.
I should have told them,
“Poetry is more shape-shifting
than prose.’
And perhaps that’s it,
the essential difference.
Poets are the magicians,
shape-shifters of expression,
finding words to encompass
grief, pain, love, beauty
that would take pages
of prose.
Poets are passionate,
inventive, though
seldom sure their
beautiful words express
the truth.
It has been said,
‘If you need to be sure,
don’t write.’
So I write what I write
in the dark.
Yet I write.
