Ten Bodies Found in a Field

by Kerry Hammerton

Somebody must record
these women
as they fall upon the earth,
trace the pattern
of their footprints,
note the blood,
the bruises,
etch their faces
into our consciousness.

Somebody must name each one:
by their fingerprints,
their teeth,
their DNA,
by their wedding-rings,
their clothes,
the shape of their cheeks,
the slant of their eyes,
the colour of their hair,
their shoes,
their broken bones.

We must record
the passing of these women
as they fall upon the earth,
we must trace the pattern.
