The Truth About Shoes

Pam Newham

“Oh, you can tell a lot about a person
by the shoes they wear.”
Stated with such authority.
Too late for me to hide
My scuffed takkies.
I have to refrain from saying
that I haven’t always worn
such pedestrian shoes as these.

No, I have bunions to show
From too tight boots
and fallen arches from teaching
in stilettos,
a toe, once broken, from dancing
in strappy silver sandals
and a damaged nail that reminds me
of the boots I wore on The Whale Trail.

So, here’s the truth then.
It’s not the shoes we wear
that tell a lot.
It’s what goes into them.
