Homework

by Liz Trew

Her home where words burn the skin
lie like cold knives in the stomach.
Sitting in her quiet corner
she cuts out a heart on pink paper
and writes down her homework:

I love my primary school.
It is 100 years old.
The teachers are kind.
My favourite subject is maths.

Her school where no-one yells or weeps or goes away.
