Bravery

by Annette Snyckers

When sorrow falls like a shroud
over the fluttering bird
I carry behind my ribs,
settles like a cloth over the cage
to silence the canary,

in the dark,
that throbbing thing tries
to sing louder,
sing more sweetly;
refuses to swallow song.
