The Aardvark

by Michael Keeling

The Aardvark has the toughest skin
and ears akin a rabbit.
Feet and claws are just like spades
as digging is its habit.

Its nostrils have some little flaps
capable of closure
and this they do when burrowing fast
avoiding dust exposure.

It breaks into a termites’ mound
its snakelike tongue aflicking
and in the chaos underground
it just keeps licking licking.

Down the hatch, batch by batch
not just one by one
sliding, slipping, tumbling, tripping,
termites by the ton.

Not for you and me perhaps
but to this acid eater
of all the morsels it consumes
nothing could be sweeter.
