Erythopygia Paena

by Elaine Edwards

Ah, Kalahari scrub robin,
I have you now
pinned down
in the pages of my Sinclair field guide.

But
when you were just a little bird
warbling your song
at dawn
on the rafters of my hut at Kieliekrankie,
breast ruffled
beak open
sun glinting off your rufous back
and I didn’t know your name,
was your song
any less sweet?
