Roadblock

by Pam Newham

It’s a slow walk down a dusty road.
Each morning one shoeless foot
in front of the other.
And each morning you come to the sign

NO ENTRY

But this road is not blocked
by what is there.
It’s blocked by what is not:
A classroom
a good teacher
A book.

Lessons

by Lise Day

I do like it when
last days of summer school
overlap
with first days of new term
fresh faced students
in luminous green takkies
long brown legs in tiny shorts
dodge zimmer frames
and walking sticks

I do hope then
They realise
that education
may take longer
than six semesters.
